I found a little gem the other morning when I came across Palm Gardens Shopping Centre. I've been in the Palm Beach area for over a year but had never driven that way. One can only get so enthusiastic about a strip of shops, but I felt like I'd stepped back into time when I was a kid on holidays here. That was when the Gold Coast was friendly and not over-run with road hoons and people in over-sized SUVs, fedoras and designer labels.

Deardens Cafe/eatery, owned by a lovely lady who makes most of the delicious food and the best coffee I've tasted since living in Italy, is another little gem within a gem. The home made savoury pies (finally someone who can make a vegetarian pie) are to die for and the passionfruit cheesecake slice has become my new signature dessert - and I don't even have a sweet tooth.

This is my favourite little chemist. I'll drive from Currumbin to visit this one. The girls are lovely and helpful. I leave my prescriptions there so I can phone in what scripts I need filled and pick them up when convenient.

There is also a chemist, family butchery and a fish & chip shop. Overall, Palm Gardens Shopping Centre has retained that villagey feel that it all but extinct on the Gold Coast in 2017. I'm going to make the most of it before this image-conscious age creeps in and debases it with, god help us, another hipster cafe.

So refreshing to find a mini supermarket that still sells sweets and newspapers on the front counter and all the essentials without trying to be a deli at the same time. Nice and simple.
